How much space a house needs

As a guide, a one-bedroom flat fits in about 9 m², a three-bedroom house in about 15 to 20 m², and a four-bedroom house with a full garage in 30 m² or more. Big couches, beds and whiteware set the size, so start with those. Our size guide goes room by room, and Storage Units shows the full table.

Pack it to last

• Use strong cartons of the same size so they stack square
• Put heavy things in small boxes and light things in big ones
• Label every box on two sides with the room and what's inside
• Clean and dry the fridge and freezer, then wedge the doors open
• Wrap mirrors and pictures and stand them on edge, never flat
• Put the things you'll need first near the door
