Furniture storage in Christchurch

Good furniture survives storage when you prepare it properly. Bad prep is what damages it, not the time in the unit. Here's how to get it right.

Protect each piece

  • Clean and dry everything first. Crumbs and damp invite mould and pests.
  • Take legs off tables and beds, and tape the screws to the piece in a labelled bag.
  • Cover with cotton sheets or furniture blankets. Plastic wrap traps moisture against wood and leather.
  • Wrap glass tops and mirrors in bubble wrap and stand them on edge.
  • Treat leather with conditioner before it goes in.

Load the unit

  1. Pallets or boards first

Lift furniture off the concrete so air flows underneath.

  2. Heavy and big at the back

Wardrobes, drawers and the fridge go against the back wall.

  3. Couches on their feet

Standing a couch on end strains the frame. Keep it upright.

  4. Leave a gap

Keep a hand's width off the walls so air moves around everything.

Picking a unit size

Furniture takes floor space, not height, because you can't stack a couch. Measure the big pieces and add them up, then add room for an aisle. Send the list with your quote request and we'll suggest a unit.
