Business storage organisation tips
A well-run unit works like a small warehouse. You find what you need in a minute, and stock never goes missing. Here's how to set one up.
Layout
- Shelving along the walls, with a clear aisle down the middle
- Fast-moving stock at the front, slow stock and archives at the back
- Heavy items on low shelves, light ones up high
- A small table or flat shelf by the door for paperwork and packing
Labels and inventory
Code every shelf
Letters for the bay, numbers for the shelf. A1 is the first shelf in the first bay.
Keep one list
A shared spreadsheet with item, quantity and shelf code. Update it every visit.
Label boxes on the end
Put labels where you see them on the shelf, not on the lid.
Count quarterly
A quick count every three months catches errors before they grow.
Safety
- Anchor tall shelving so it can't tip
- Keep the aisle clear so nobody trips carrying stock
- Stack boxes no higher than head height
- Keep flammables, chemicals and fuel out of the unit
Records and privacy
Records with personal information need protecting under the Privacy Act 2020. Use lidded archive boxes, keep a log of who holds a key or gate code, and mark each box with its destroy-after date. See business storage or get a quote.
